Although grapes, the primarily used fruit for wine, and cork are both originally from the Mediterranean region, the oldest known wine bottle stoppers are believed to be cloths and leather, from Ancient Greece. It wasn't until the mid seventeen century when we had a process to manufacture uniform wine bottles that we also have the use of corks for sealing the bottles. This also allowed the wine to better age in the bottle, because of the very minute pores in the cork. Because of cork being so tightly inside the bottle, it also needed a special tool to it remove. The first corkscrew patent was to an English clergyman, Samuel Henshall in 1795. This wood handle Italian bell corkscrew is from Italy early twentieth century. As seen 28 September 2023.
