Priorat is a Spanish Denominació d`Origen Qualificada DOQ for wines produced in the Priorat county, in the province of Tarragona, in the southwest of Catalonia. The DOQ covers 11 municipalities. It primarily produces powerful red wines, which came to international attention in the 1990s. The area is characterized by its unique terroir of black slate and quartz soil known as llicorella. It is one of the two highest quality wine regions in Spain to according to Spanish wine regulations, alongside Rioja. Priorat is the Catalan word, the one that appears most often on wine labels. The region is rugged, hilly, and home to rustic and charming villages. Easy to visit from Barcelona and beyond it is perfect for laid-back enotourism. As a very small, low production region it focuses on small, intimate visits with the owner often as the host and include walks through the vineyards to help visitors understand the unique qualities of the region.
