| Established in 1859, the Singapore Botanic Gardens is the only tropical garden to be honoured as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in recognition for its role in the region's rubber trade and for its tropical colonial garden landscape. Located at the fringe of the city's Orchard Road shopping district, it houses more than 10,000 species of flora, spread over its area of 82 hectares (200 acres). Built in 1974, the Symphony Lake is an artificial lake and features a large stage known as the Shaw Foundation Symphony Stage on an islet in the middle of the water body. |
