Like many Moroccan cities, Marrakesh comprises an old fortified city packed with vendors and their stalls the medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, bordered by modern neighbourhoods, the most prominent of which is Gueliz. Today it is one of the busiest cities in Africa and serves as a major economic centre and tourist destination. Nowhere is Moroccoâââ‰â¢s living craftsmanship better illuminated than in the working carpentersâââ‰â¢ and blacksmithsâââ‰â¢ souks âââ‰â¬Å Souk Chouari and Souk Haddadine, at the northern edge of the souks. These fragrant, noisy alleys are refreshingly untouristy. To the southwest of this main cluster of streets is Souk Sebbaghine or Souk des Teinturiers âââ‰â¬Å the dyers` souk, where rich iridescent skeins of wools and silks coloured with indigo, saffron, mint, poppy and rose blaze against the sky. Music lovers should explore Souk Kimakhine, where traditional Moroccan and Gnaoua instruments are sold.
