In the mid 1930`s when Valetta moved to San Francisco's Telegraph Hill with her husband Desmond Heslet and her mother Grace, they found the remains of an old quarry and a slum, sand and mud, and a very beautiful view of the bay. They quickly bought a house, obtained permission from the city to do the planting all along the hillside, and had all kinds of artists move in or visit regularly. It quickly became a very fashionable neighborhood. Because much of this hill is accessible only by foot by very narrow and steep steps, even fire trucks have no access, the Fire Department has special lockers with special tools along the hill. As seen 18 April 2024.
