India is the third largest coal producing nation and Coal India Limited (CIL) is the biggest company in the world in terms of coal production. With a 510,000 employees, CIL contributes 87% to the total coal production of the country. In the post independence era coal has been the most important fossil fuel in building the Indian economy. Far from cities, small villages on wavy landscapes with grayish black roads typify a coalfield. An atmosphere of class difference, socio-economical oppression and high degree of pollution makes the miners go through a harrowing experience day in and day out.
