The Temple for Lord Vishnu, known also as Badrinarayan, is an important pilgrimage center for Hindus. Temple is located on the banks of the Alakananda river, a tributary of the Ganges, in the mountainous district of Garhwal Himalayas, in the state of Uttarkhand. On account of its high altitude of over 3000 meters, extreme weather and difficult approach, it is open for only six months a year during summer. The Holy Shrine is very old and finds mention in the Vedas and other old Hindu sacred texts. This dates it to nearly 1700 BC.
