Crimean Lavra Crimean Athos monastery of the Assumption Bakhchisarai Holy Assumption Cave Monastery - Orthodox monastery in the Crimea. Located in the natural boundary of Mariam-Dere (Mary Gorge) near Bakhchisarai. Reports to Simferopol and Crimean Diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate). In addition to the monastery complex, at a location nearby is a cemetery of soldiers who died during the Crimean War of 1853-1856. The monastery was founded by Byzantine monks ikonopochitateley within the VIII century. In XIII-XIV centuries for some time ceased its activity, then revived in XIV century. Avoid defeat during the Turkish invasion in 1475, the Assumption monastery became the residence of Metropolitan Gotsfskih. With the XV to XVIII century Monastery of the Assumption was the main stronghold of the religious life of the Orthodox population of the Crimea. Since 1781 the monastery functioned as the parish church, led by the Greek priest. In 1850, the monastic community was revived with the establishment of the Assumption cave monastery.
