This magnificent Palace, which is undoubtedly the exquisite embellishment of Moscow, was built in 1776-1780 on the order of Empress Catherine II The Great by the architect Matvey Kazakov and has retained its historic exterior and interior appearance by the present day. The Palace was located at the entrance to Moscow from St. Petersburg and was used as the residence for the rest of the Royal and noble persons after a long journey between the two capitals hence the name, `travelling palace`. The building is an example of Russian neo-Gothic architecture with a lush, eclectic decor. The outer perimeter of the Palace is formed by the walls of the side annexes with towers, that reminds a fortress, so a Palace sometimes called `a castle`. In the XX century the Palace was re-equipped according all the modern trends. Now, as in former times, the luxurious Palace opens its doors to VIP guests. In addition to the hotel, there are restaurant, swimming pool, a sauna, a press center, a Museum, a hall for chamber concerts of classic music. The masterpiece is under state protection.
