The area of origin of the tomato is Central and South America, with wild forms distributed and native from northern Chile to Venezuela. There, tomatoes were cultivated by the Maya and other peoples from about 200 BC to 700 AD as XÃÂ«tomatl or tomatl for short. Seeds were found during excavations south of Mexico City in caves in the TehuacÃÂ¡n Valley.
