According to ancient Greek mythology,Atlas was one of the Titans who did battle with the newly arrived Gods, for supremacy in the Heavens,on Mt Olympus. For his part for being on the loosing side,Atlas was condemned to hold up the Heavenly Sky. Charles Tiffany opened his first store,in New York City,in 1837. He was doing so well by 1853 that he was able to make his second move, onto Broadway. Tiffany was a man of taste, and did not like the outside of this new building. Tiffany was good friends with Henry Metzler, who was well known for carving figure heads for ships. Tiffany gave Metzler the commission of a nine foot tall Atlas supporting a four foot diameter clock. As the business changed locations a few more times after this, the clock kept following them, and always reclaiming its rightful place at the stores entrance. It wasn't until 1990 that Tiffany opened their first store outside of New York,in Virginia. They now have 321 store worldwide, including this one in San Francisco's Union Square. As seen 22 March 2023.
