The waves in Bideford Bay, run towards the beach and the Pebble Ridge beyond. Eroded by the sea, over thousands of years, the round grey cobbles made of fine grained sandstone from the upper carboniferous period, have been deposited at the top of the beach by long shore drift, making a natural two miles long sea defence.
