The thylacine, also known as the Tasmanian tiger or Tasmanian wolf, was a carnivorous marsupial native to Tasmania, Australia, and New Guinea. It was the largest known carnivorous marsupial of modern times, distinguished by its dog-like body, striped back, and strong jaws. Excessive hunting, habitat destruction, and disease led to its decline, with the last known individual dying in captivity at Hobart Zoo on September 7, 1936. Despite occasional unverified sightings, the species is considered officially extinct.
