| This is a Chlosyne theona butterfly species, Nymphalidae family, Melitaeini tribe. Common name: Theona orange checkerspot. Genus Chlosyne comprises of about 26 species. Most of the species have a black ground colour, and are marked with bands or patches of cream and reddish-orange, often in conjunction with a series of white spots in the post-median area of fore and hind wings. This one was feeding nectar from a flower. Observed near Mayan Biosphere Reserve, Peten department, Guatemala. Population and distribution threatened by climate change. |
