Pictured is a Blues Alley project mural featuring Sister Rosetta Tharpe by Dallas contemporary painter Desiree Vaniecia in Deep Ellum, Texas. Tharpe was the first great recording star of gospel music and among the first gospel musicians to appeal to rhythm-and-blues and rock-and-roll audiences, later being referred to as "the original soul sister" and "the Godmother of rock and roll". Blues Alley was the idea of artists Dan and wife Cathryn Colcer to pay tribute to the legends who contributed so much to the blues music genre that spurred the Deep Ellum Cultural District to become a world-renowned destination. Local property owners and the Deep Ellum Foundation also have been partners in the community muraling project.
