Pictured is the The Ponte Maria Pia over the River Douro in Porto, Portugal. The former iron railway bridge was built in 1877 and named after the Portuguese queen at the time. It was designed by German architect Teophile Seyrig who also designed the Ponte Dom Luis I Bridge. Rail services ceased in 1991 and moved to the São João Bridge. The bridge was not demolished but preserved as a landmark of the city. It is the oldest of the six bridges that span the Douro in Porto.
