Pictured is a white plant, crinum asiaticum, in a bed of lava on the Big Island, Hawaii. The plant is commonly known as poison bulb, giant crinum lily, grand crinum lily, and spider lily. The entire plant is toxic, especially the bulb. The whole plant contains a variety of alkaloids such as lycorine and tazettine. Eating the flower by mistake can cause vomiting, abdominal pain, severe diarrhea after constipation, irregular breathing, rapid pulse and rising body temperature. If too much is consumed nervous system paralysis and death can occur.
