In the Middle Ages Tangermuende was a member of the famous and powerful Hanseatic League. Its name tells us that the River Tanger flows into the Elbe River at that location. The photo shows us the Elbe Gate, one of the gates facing the Elbe River. In the backgroud one can see the steeple of St Stephen's church.
