Pictured is a statue of the Jesuit missionary Father Nicolas Tamaral in the Mission of San Jose del Cabo Anuiti in Saint Joseph of the Cape in southern Baja California Sur state, Mexico. The mission was built in 1730 by the missionary and the Spanish appointed official Jose Echeverria. The mission was dedicated to Saint Joseph, and was built on the site that the native pericues called Anuiti. Father Nicolas Tamaral died in the Rebellion of the Pericues in 1734. The Indians reportedly tied him up, dragged him, fired several arrows at him and then topped him with a long knife.
