Sword Carriers walk along the route of the Esala Perahera in Kandy, Sri Lanka. They walk with swords raised as a symbol of protection for the Sacred Tooth Relic. The Esala Perahera runs every year in late July or early August for ten days, ending on the Nikini poya full moon and is held to honour the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha which is enshrined within the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy.
