Lysosomes are spherical organelles enclosed by a single lipid bilayer membrane. The interior of the lysosome contains a highly acidic environment maintained by proton pumps embedded in the lysosomal membrane. This acidic environment is essential for the optimal activity of lysosomal enzymes.
