Entamoeba histolytica is a parasitic protozoan that causes amoebiasis, which is an infectious disease primarily affecting the intestines. Once ingested, the cysts pass through the stomach and release trophozoites in the small intestine. These trophozoites then colonize the large intestine, where they can cause disease. In some cases, trophozoites can invade the intestinal wall, leading to tissue damage and potentially systemic spread of the infection.
