The ancient city of Pingyao was located in the central part of Shanxi Province. It was built during the Zhou Xuanwang period. It was expanded in the three years of Ming Hongwu 1370 and has a history of more than 2,700 years. It still retains the basic style of the county town in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and is the most complete ancient city in existence in the Han ethnic area of China. It is one of the only two ancient cities in China that has successfully declared the world cultural heritage with the entire ancient city. It was included in the World Cultural Heritage List in 1997.
