He guides the dead in the next world, watches over them and presides over mummification. The canine diety is pictured as a muscular jackal dog, sitting atop a flat trapezoidal altar made of gilded wood. The museum was built in 1901 to a design by French architect Marcel Dourgnon. In 2022, the museum is due to be superseded by the newer and larger Grand Egyptian Museum at Giza.
