The invasive Asian spotted lanternfly, Lycorma delicatula, lays eggs on trees with all protective covering that has aged and cracked in the picture. If left unharmed from 30 to 50 insects will hatch from this in spring and begin feeding on surrounding plants. The insect was first found in Pennsylvania in 2014 and is spreading to other states. This photo was taken in January 2023 in southern New Jersey.
