These unusual constructions are concrete sound mirrors and were part of a chain of such buildings built along the English coast between 1915 and 1933. They were an experimental design before the advent of radar and were used to try and detect the sound from enemy aircraft engines before a visual sighting was possible. These two mirrors are 20 feet and 30 feet in diameter. |
