The somatic PNS consists of efferent nerve fibers carrying information to muscle and skin, peripheral sensory receptors, and afferent nerve fibers carrying information from the periphery to the CNS. The efferent fibers emerge from neurons located in the spinal gray matter and exit the spinal cord via the ventral root.
