Daikannonji Temple, a Shokannon sect temple in Chuo-ku, TokyoThe principal image of this temple is an iron statue of the Shokannon Bodhisattva, with only the head, worshipped by Hojo Masako. It was originally located in Shin-Kiyomizu-dera Temple (now abandoned) in Kamakura, but collapsed in a fire in 1258 (Shoka 2). After that, when a well was dug, the iron Bodhisattva head with only the head was excavated and enshrined in a small chapel. Due to this background, the well came to be called Kurogane no I (Iron Well). |
