Pictured is Bahram V Killing Lions on display in the Dallas Museum of Art in Dallas, Texas. It is folio from a copy of the Shahnama or Book of Kings by Firdawsi. It was created circa 1550-1575 using ink, opaque watercolor, and gold on paper in Iran, Safavid period. Bahram V reigned from 403-408 CE and was the fifteenth king of the Sasanian dynasty. He is one of the most celebrated heroes of the Shahanama, revered for his bravery, intelligence, and generosity. He was also a skilled hunter. Lion hunting was considered the archetypal sport of Persian Kings.
