The stone torii gateway to the shrine is inscribed with the date of construction, Koka 2 (1845 A.D.), which means that the shrine was built before that date. In the old days, when fishermen prayed, seagulls flew to the shrine and brought in a big catch, so the shrine was called Seagull Inari because seagulls were worshipped as a sign of a big catch.
