| Denniston lies high in the hills behind Westport on the Denniston Plateau on the South Island of New Zealand. During its operation from October 1879 to August 1967, as many as 12 million tons of high-quality coal were mined from this mine. The Denniston Incline is a high-slope track that, for its length of 1.7 km, had to overcome an elevation gain of 510 meters. |
