Due to all the turmoil going on throughout France in the latter part of the 19th century, Modeleine Sophie Barat founded the Catholic Schools of the Sacred Heart in 1801 to educate young woman for broad-reaching social change. Now in some 44 countries, the San Francisco one was founded in 1887. This Herbst House was built in 1914 in the Beaux Arts style. Although long known as the home of brothers Herman and Maurice Herbst, was initially the home of Florence and Samuel Lowenstein, although it was the home of Herman and Maurice at the time of their passing, after which it was bought by the School of Sacred Heart.
