Neither of the bridges are functional now, and they have been stripped of their associated paraphernalia, but both are quite remarkable. Today they are painted red, and look great. Their scale is best appreciated when you stand beneath them - they are truly massive. Scherzer bascule bridges are lift bridges that roll or rock back on a curved base to rise so that ships can pass beneath, and are often compared to Medieval draw-bridges.
