Chitwan National Park is located in the mid Terrai region of Nepal and is the country’s third largest attraction after trekking and the Kathmandu Valley. This lush nature preserve protects dense sal forest, water marshes and grassland plains. The park is especially renowned for its protection of rare single horned rhinoceros and royal Bengal tigers. The park also shelters numerous bird species. Dugout canoes traverse the northern Rapti River, home to Gharial Crocodiles. Chitwan and the surrounding town of Sauraha are a popular safari destination for tourists, offering guided tours through the jungle. Chitwan was granted the status of a World Heritage site in 1984.
