Saturn V F-1 rocket engines. The Apollo mission that launched a human to the moon. NASA needed a rocket twice as tall and 10 times as powerful as any that existed in 1961 when President Kennedy announced the goal of reaching the moon. The Saturn V is still the largest and most powerful rocket ever to reach operational status. At liftoff the five F-1 engines in the first stage produced a combined thrust of more than 7.5 million pounds. The Saturn V rocket is on temporary display at Museum of Flight in Seattle, WA. |
