The Old San Juan area of Puerto Rico contains many beautifully colored and restored 16th and 17th century Spanish colonial period buildings. Streets were originally paved with blue cobblestones which were the iron slag ballast stones left by sailing ships that arrived from Europe. San Juan was established in 1521 and is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the United States.
