Detail of the frescoed ceiling of San Giovanni features a prominent mandorla that frames the Christ figure and is part of traditional Christian iconography. The historic San Giovanni or Saint John’s Church in Bolzano, Italy is the oldest church in the city dating back to at least 1180. Known in German as St. Johann im Dorf. The small Romansque church or chiesa, is built of stone and contains a single nave and a barrel vault ceiling decorated with frescoes depicting biblical stories. The apse was painted in 1330 to 1335, and the ceiling and nave frescoed in 1365. The interior is only open to visitors on a very limited basis.
