The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, known locally as the Bay Bridge, carries traffic over the San Francisco Bay in California. It has one of the longest spans in the United States. As part of Interstate 80, it is the direct road between San Francisco and Oakland, CA. The bridge has two sections of roughly equal length. The older western section, officially known as the Willie L. Brown Jr. Bridge, is a double suspension bridge with two decks. The newer eastern section is unnamed and its largest span was originally a cantilever bridge. The eastern section was rebuilt after is was damaged during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. The reconstructed eastern section is a single deck carrying all eastbound and westbound lanes, making it the world’s widest bridge.
