The state of California operates Department of Motor Vehicles field offices throughout the state, including one in San Francisco, which it was able to take over almost all of the city block bounded by Baker, Fell, Broderick and Oak Streets, opening the new building in September 1961. In this whole time, the only technological update to the whole two and one half acre lot is a solar powered Electric Vehicle charging station. Since this building no longer meets the states standards for work place health and safety, the whole building is being torn down and replaced. But this time when this new building opens, scheduled for 1929, there will also be much needed affordable housing units, scheduled for opening in 2030. The beautiful Edwardian apartment building that has been on the corner of Fell and Broderick, the sole building to be bypassed by razing the first time around, is again not on the chopping block. As seen 5 October 2024.
