The city is located in the Salzburg Basin about 25 km north of the Tennen Mountains and lies on both sides of the Salzach River. The Salzach River flows through the city and forms unpaved urban hills, making Salzburg one of Europe`s greenest cities. The town`s hills include the Capuchin Mountain, the Monk Mountain, the Border Mountain and Festungsberg, where the throne is the largest fully preserved medieval castle in Europe. In the south-west of the city there is the legendary Unterberg, 1853 m high. To the east it is not far to the Salzkammergut region in the middle with the Salzkammergutberge. To the north, Salzburg opens, and the floodplain forests along the Salzach River are adjacent to the city as well as the low foothills of Flachgau, especially Plainberg or Calvary Kalvarienberg with its pilgrimage basilica Maria Plain, which offers a good view of the whole Salzburg. In the northwest, the city borders directly with Bavaria, the Saalach river forms the border with the neighboring city of Freilassing in Bavaria.
