In the north, the slopes of the Andes are covered with humid equatorial forest, where, for example, representatives of Espeletia grow. The central part is characterized by desert and semi-desert formations (so-called puna) forests cover this part of the Andes only on the eastern side. In the mountainous highlands, in desert places, you can encounter salt pans, e.g. in the Atacama Desert - there is poor vegetation there, mainly saltworts, cacti, and occasionally shrubs. Further south, evergreen sclerophyllous thickets appear on the ocean side, and steppes on the continental side. Mangroves grow in coastal areas that are flooded during high tides. Antarctic vegetation occurs above 40°S. The Patagonian Plateau is covered with steppe and semi-desert vegetation, and subarctic tundra occurs on Tierra del Fuego.
