The Piazzo Duomo seen in early morning light located in the center of the medieval city of Trento, Italy. Neptune’s Fountain, also known as Fontana del Nettuno, can be seen in the middle of the public square with the Duomo Trento behind it. Sculpted by artist Stefano Salterio in the mid-1700’s, the Baroque fountain is topped by the Roman god of the sea, Neptune, brandishing his three-prong trident. The original settlement founded by the Celts, was conquered by the Romans who named the city Tridentum, referencing their Roman god Neptune. Tridentum means “three teeth” and refers to the three mountain peaks that surround the city. Framed by a bright blue sky, the mountain peaks of the Dolomites can be viewed from the piazza.
