| The famous Saigo Takamori statue in Ueno Park, Tokyo. Originally from Satsuma in Southern Japan, Takamori was a key leader of the pro-emperor forces during the Meiji Revolution but later fell out with the new government over various issues and led the brief Satsuma Rebellion. Many Japanese continue to consider him the last true samurai. (Image taken in Nov 2023) |
