The Rutgers University Marching Scarlet Knights take the field prior to the beginning of the football game between the Rutgers Homecoming football game with NCAA Division 1Big Ten Conference rival UCLA. The band has over 300 members. The venue is SHI Stadium in Piscataway, New Jersey, on October 19, 2024. Although the Bruins put a damper on the Scarlet Knights festivities by winning 35-32, the occasion was also the scene of the unveiling of a large mural for 1919 valedictorian and graduate, Paul Robeson. Robeson, son of an escaped slave, and was only the 3rd Black man to attend Rutgers, founded in 1767. He was also the first to play football and was an All-American. He also lettered in 3 additional sports. He spoke fluently over 20 languages and became an orator, actor, singer, and a passionate civil and human rights activist until his death in 1976.
