The name of the genus, "Syroezhka", probably comes from the words "raw" and "food" (Old Russian "hedgehog") and, according to mushroom pickers, indicates that all mushrooms of this genus can be safely eaten raw. This is a fairly common misconception. Our ancestors did not eat raw-toothed mushrooms raw, except in those distant times when everything else was also eaten raw. The Russian name "Syroezhka" these mushrooms received, most likely, because during salting — the traditional Slavic method of harvesting mushrooms — syroezhki, like many raw-toothed ones, quickly became suitable for food.
