Vatra Dornei is a typical mountain depression city, located in the northern part of the Eastern Carpathians, at an average altitude of about 800 meters. The city is located in the Dornelor Depression which has the following limits: Rarau and GiumalÃÆu Mountains to the northeast with BÃÆrnÃÆrel Peak - 1,321 meters; CÃÆlimani Mountains to the south with Dealu Negru Peak - 1,302 meters and Suhard Mountains to the north with Runc Peak - 1,149 meters. The geology of the territory consists of crystalline shales Suhard Mountains, in the north and volcanic rocks CÃÆlimÃÆni Mountains, in the south.
