Close to the Devon border, Launceston is the capital of Cornwall and a pretty town with bustling market square and fine Georgian buildings. The castle was built by Henry III's brother Richard in 1227 as a shell keep, to which a fighting platform was added later. Impressive views from the top show how it was a good fortress with the ability to spot enemy from afar. In the 17th century, George Fox, founder of the Quakers was imprisoned here for 8 months.
