A Rolls Royce Trent 500 turbofan engine. Trent 500 is certified to 60,000 lbs thrust output & derated on the Airbus A340-500/600. Modern aircraft engines thrust can be altered (either max rated thrust or below that) by changing the settings (modifying some coding) on a fully computerized control system called the FADEC (Full Authority Digital Engine Control). The housing of the FADEC can be seen as the black box on the top right side of the engine. Airbus A340-600: Trent 556, 56,000 lbs of thrust. Airbus A340-500: Trent 553, 53,000 lbs of thrust. Whereas the Airbus A340-200/300 uses CFM56 engine similar to that of the Boeing 737s and A320s.
