Pictured is a royal tern, binomial name Thalasseus maximus, flying in a blue sky with white clouds over Chokoloskee Bay in Florida. The royal tern is found on both coasts of the Americas. It feeds in salt water and rarely in fresh water by diving into the water from heights near 30 feet to capture small fish such as anchovies, weakfish, and croakers. They also eat insects, shrimp, crabs, and hatching sea turtles. Chokoloskee Bay is roughly 10 miles long and 2 miles wide. It is located along Florida's Gulf Coast and is separated from the Gulf of Mexico by the Ten Thousand islands. |
