Royal Albert Dock Liverpool is the most-visited free tourist destination in North West England, home to museums, galleries, restaurants, bars and shops. The Royal Albert Dock is a complex of dock buildings and warehouses in Liverpool, England. Designed by Jesse Hartley and Philip Hardwick, it was opened in 1846, and was the first structure in Britain to be built from cast iron, brick and stone, with no structural wood. Awarded the accolade as a mercantile maritime city, it remains an example of one of the world's major trading centres in the 18th and 19th centuries. Albert Dock was central to Liverpool's role in the growth of the British Empire, migration to America, and a pioneer of dock technology, transport and port management.
